Issues #1-137 were published by HM Communications. Issues #138 to present are published by Metal Mammoth, Inc.
For the majority of its run, Heavy Metal was numbered using a Vol. XX, No. X format. This database indexed the series with an invented consecutive numbering for each issue (#1, 2, 3, etc.) while inputting the correct Vol. XX, No. X for each issue's Title Name. With the July 2012 issue however, Heavy Metal has dropped the Vol. XX, No. X format and changed to consecutive numbering perhaps due to the confusion over the past few years detailed in the next paragraph.
The magazine has also released a large number of special issues. At first they were published annually, then bi-annually, and then up to four times a year. The specials had their own unique Vol. XX, No. X numbering, not associated with the regular magazine's. That is, until the Fall 2008 Eerie Special. The previous special was numbered Vol. 22, No. 2, and the Fall 2008 special jumped ahead to Vol. 32, No. 8. The specials were now numbered in sequence with the regular magazine, so you'll find that the numbering of the regular magazine might appear to be incomplete at first. To illustrate, here's how Vol. 33 was released:
Vol.33 No.1 - March 2009 - Regular Issue
Vol.33 No.2 - Spring 2009 - Cryptic Special
Vol.33 No.3 - May 2009 - Regular Issue
Vol.33 No.4 - July 2009 - Regular Issue
Vol.33 No.5 - Summer 2009 - Arcane Special
Vol.33 No.6 - September 2009 - Regular Issue
Vol.33 No.7 - November 2009 - Regular Issue
Vol.33 No.8 - Fall 2009 - Terror Special
Vol.33 No.9 - January 2010 - Regular Issue
After that sole Vol. 32 Special, this confusing numbering scheme continued through volumes 33, 34 and 35. Two regular issues of Vol. 36 were published, and then Heavy Metal switched to the consecutive numbering as detailed in the first paragraph. Specials from July 2012 onward are now just regularly numbered issues of the magazine.
