From 1969 until 1983, Warren Publications brought us Vampirella, the sultry female vampire. What had started out as a gag piece first turned into a serious horror comic, then eventually grew into a cult phenomenon.
“Vampi,” as she is known to her fans, was the perfect mix of heroine and night creature. She hails from the planet Drakulon, where the rivers are said to literally flow with blood. Although not one of the classically undead herself, she nevertheless needs to drink blood (or a special serum which replaces it) in order to survive.
In addition to its thrilling namesake, this adult-oriented black-and-white magazine featured other great tales of horror and science-fiction in each issue. Starlin, Brunner, Wrightson, and others contributed their various talents to this unique and memorable horror comic magazine.
