Dark Horse Classics: Star Wars: Dark Empire   (1997)

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

Publication Date: March 1997 - August 1997

Country: United States

Language: English

A mere re-issuing of the 1991-2 series, Star Wars: Dark Empire. Note that Dark Horse was only calling it a "classic" and re-issuing it prior to the release of Episode I. Its place in the Expanded Universe has become more ambiguous since then. In particular, the introduction of midichlorians into the mythos has made the idea of the Emperor being able to clone himself less plausible. A replica of a Force user would require not only the cloning of the individual, but of each individual midichlorian to make the duplicate as Force sensitive as the original.

Nevertheless, it remains a "classic" to some for a number of reasons. To Dark Horse, it will probably always be a classic, because it was their first attempt at original Star Wars material. It also has a lot of other important developments in the pre-prequel era, including: the dramatic return of Boba Fett, the first appearance (albeit in vitro) of Anakin Solo, the first real examination of Leia as Jedi Knight, the first stirrings of a New Jedi Order, the first comics exploration of the New Republic (outside of Marvel's immediately-post-Episode VI Endor-based stories), an extended treatment of Admiral Ackbar's home of Mon Calimari, and the first visuals of Nar Shaddaa and Hutt culture.
