Publication Date: February 1978 - 1982
Country: United States
Published, as the covers proudly proclaimed, "every Wednesday" in the UK from 8 February 1978 until 1982, this magazine has a lot in common with its sister publication, Doctor Who Weekly. A mixture of comics and news, it was the primary source of Star Wars information for the UK market during the time that the first trilogy was produced.
Unlike DWM, though, it was decidedly heavier on comics pages, and faithfully reprinted what issues of the US Star Wars Marvel run (and, to a lesser extent, Pizzaz) that were then available to it. Due to the mixture of material in the book, it took three issues of this magazine to equal one US comic book's panel count. Even so, there came periods where everything that could've been printed from the US had been printed. The US publication was, after all, ongoing at the same time. At those moments where the UK publication had fully caught up with the US book, new material was inserted. At first, this "new" material was in the form of unused Goodwin/Williamson work for the US book. Eventually, though, Marvel UK commissioned work from UK native artists--some of whom are today hugely famous--to "mind the gaps".
Since the UK and US books stopped at around the same time, the runs in their entirety were ultimately a bit different from each other, and there are some stories which became "UK-only" and others that were "US only". Eventually in the 90s, Dark Horse managed to reprint the whole of the US catalog, and offer it for sale, through Titan, to the UK market. Thus, there really are no longer such things as "US only" stories. However, a few of the UK stories have yet to be republished, and thus remain the most-prized parts of any serious Star Wars comic collector's library.
