Nomenclature
In truth, this series began in its life, both on the cover and in the indicia, as the more simply-titled, The X-Men. It ran with this title for 15 years. In October 1978's issue #114, it became The Uncanny X-Men on the cover, but remained The X-Men officially—until the indicia name, too, was changed in issue #142. By issue #394 the cover would read Uncanny X-Men (without "The") and the indicia would reflect this change starting in issue #408.

When Marvel began publishing X-Men (no definite article) in October 1991, many comic fans began referring to this entire title by The Uncanny X-Men, in order to easily differentiate it from X-Men (1991). This differentiation is important because for several years (1995-1996, and 1998-2000) The Uncanny X-Men and X-Men shared story lines. When describing those story arcs, it is much clearer if this title, in its entirety, is seen as obviously different from the 1991 title.

For this reason, though slightly inaccurate, we have chosen in this database to follow the conventional wisdom about the title and call the entire thing The Uncanny X-Men, leaving X-Men entirely to the 1991 title.

Other indices refer to issues #1-141 as The X-Men vol. 1.

Continuously published?
In a very technical sense, this title has not been in publication since 1963. It was cancelled, briefly, after March 1970's issue #66. However, it resumed publication some nine months later, reducing the significance of that cancellation to that of a mere trivia question.
