When superhero comics began to ebb away in the late 1940s, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby had to find other genre in which to play. They had recently had good success launching their 1947 title, Young Romance, when they began to feel restless yet again.
They thus created Boys' Ranch. It combined their own talent for creating teams made of young people with the other new craze of the 50s, westerns.
A complex cast of characters ensured multiple avenues for dramatic tension to flow, but it unfortunately did not guarantee newsstand success. Despite being work that the two creators felt was among their very best, the comic was cancelled after a mere six issues.
The entire run was reprinted by Marvel in an early 1990s hardback.
